Hearing Scheduled On Latest Yankee Court Case

A federal court judge has set a hearing date for early June in Entergy Vermont Yankee’s latest legal challenge against the state of Vermont.

The owner of Vermont’s only nuclear plant sued the state last month, charging that state regulators have delayed approval of a back-up emergency diesel generator.

Yankee is under orders from the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission to install a back-up power source by September. The generator is supposed to be available if the plant is disabled and loses electricity from the transmission grid.

As Layoff Rumors Circulate, Big Blue Still A Big Deal in Vermont

After a disappointing first quarter earnings report, IBM announced there will be layoffs in the second quarter.  The company says most of the job cuts would take place outside the U.S. but in recent days there have been rumors that cuts are imminent at domestic IBM facilities, including in Vermont.

Fri 5/17/13 Noon & 7PM The Legislature adjourned late Wednesday night after finalizing the budget, and passing controversial bills on marijuana decriminalization, end of life care, and drivers licenses for non-citizens. There were quite a few proposals left on the table, however. VTDigger's Anne Galloway, Pete Hirschfeld of the Vermont Press Bureau and VPR's John Dillon join Bob Kinzel to look back at 2013's legislative session.

Temporary Closing Of Rockingham Library Draws Criticism

The Rockingham LIbrary is undergoing a renovation.

The Board Of Trustees at the Rockingham Free Public Library ruffled some feathers this week when it decided to close the library until mid to late July.  The library is in need of some upgrades and plans to use that time to make them. Some community members say the library should stay open, and that some board members should resign.

Domenic Poli has been following that story for the Brattleboro Reformer and spoke with VPR's Peter Biello about the situation.

Despite Call To Act, Little Progress On Climate Change, Thermal Efficiency

Environmental activist Bill McKibben prepares to address the Vermont House.

Gov. Peter Shumlin and legislative leaders came into the recent session promising to make combating climate change a top priority.

Lawmakers and the governor said a warming world was the defining crisis of our time. They focused on an effort to make homes more energy efficient.

But the reality has not lived up to the rhetoric.

Dartmouth Student Arrested for Rape

A Dartmouth student is accused of raping a fellow student in her dorm room earlier this month. He was initially held for lack of bail.

Dartmouth College officials are declining to speak publicly about the incident, which is still under investigation. And Hanover police commented only in a  press release.

Police say Parker Gilbert, a junior from London, trespassed into a female student’s unlocked dorm room and sexually assaulted her.
