Brendan Kinney oversees all of VPR’s fundraising efforts, including major and planned giving, membership, underwriting, foundation grants, and capital campaigns. He also manages VPR's efforts to reach new listeners. Kinney joined VPR in February 2010.

Kinney comes to VPR from SUNY Plattsburgh, where he served as Associate Vice President of Institutional Advancement and Executive Director of Marketing and Public Relations. Previously, he was Director of Saint Michael’s College Annual Fund and Advancement Services.

Kinney holds a Bachelor’s degree in English and a Master’s degree in Education from Saint Michael’s College. He serves as a member of the Essex Town School District Board of Directors and resides in Essex with Mary Brodsky and their three children.

Everything you ever wanted to know about VPR's membership drives, but were afraid to ask!

What do you mean by "all the funding in March, skip the drive in June?"
When listeners help us meet our $410,000 goal during the March 2017 membership drive, we will skip the pledge drive in June.

Update: at 8:15 a.m. on Friday, July 1, we reached our fundraising goal of $300,000 and "unlocked" the $100,000 challenge for a grand total of $400,000! Thanks to the more than 4,500 listeners who contributed to our fundraiser to help pay for the programming and all of the services VPR provides.

One of the most rewarding aspects of a membership drive is that, in addition to donations, we receive thousands of comments from listeners. Some are appreciative, some offer constructive criticism, and some provide downright inspiration.

On the last day of the December membership drive - when it looks like we'll end a bit short of our goal - we received the following email from Ken Cadow, a middle school teacher and supporter of VPR. After making his year-end gift, he sent us the following note:

Did you know that if you own a smart phone, you are also carrying an FM radio in your pocket?

Every smart phone manufactured today contains an FM chip, but unlike in Europe, most in the U.S. are not activated. Increasingly, the device that people use for connecting to the world is their smart phone. For that reason, NPR and APM are working with our friends in commercial radio and religious broadcasting to urge the major cell phone service providers to activate the FM chip that is already in all the mobile phones they sell.

Neal Charnoff, VPR’s longtime local host of All Things Considered, will be setting his alarm clock a bit earlier as the new host of Morning Edition at WFDD public radio in Winston-Salem, NC. The news of Neal’s departure from VPR was shared with his colleagues earlier this week. He cited long Vermont winters and a desire to be closer to stepchildren as reasons for his decision.

To better serve our audience, VPR has been working hard to provide our distinctive programming on as many platforms as possible.

VPR’s membership drive is off to a great start, with nearly $100,000 raised so far.

If you love Vermont and food (and who doesn’t?) and haven’t made your contribution to VPR yet, you’ll want to do it now to be entered into two exciting prize drawings happening tonight and tomorrow morning.

Thanks to all of our listeners who made a year-end gift to VPR during our December membership drive - we successfully concluded our drive at 7 p.m. on Friday evening, surpassing our goal of $250,000. Your gift makes a difference and will help VPR serve you even better in 2014.

A few weeks ago, questions emerged about the safety of ceramic mugs from the VPR Artist Mug Series. In response, VPR had all 34 of the mugs produced in the past decade screened at a Vermont firm. That process identified 11 mugs that contain lead.

Our fall membership drive ended in a whirlwind, with an incredible last day that raised over $60,000 in support for the stories that matter and the programming that you love.

We also want to thank our 11,000 strong Sustaining Members, who made a shorter drive possible (8 days compared to a typical 10-day drive). The more Sustainers we have the less on-air fundraising we do each year!

When it comes to membership drives, it’s all about the math.

If you are a dedicated listener, then you know that we can get a little punchy during our membership drives.

Do you hear that?

It’s the sound of a pledge-free day.

And you have Sustaining Members to thank for it.

Our September Membership Drive is shorter than past drives due to the fact that listeners in droves have flocked to Sustaining Membership as an easy and convenient way to support VPR.

Our September Membership Drive is off to a strong start! Although we missed a challenge of receiving 150 pledges before 9 a.m. (we received 130!) our faithful listeners came through in a big way, contributing nearly $10,000.

Today, we kick-off our September Membership Drive.

And although we are still on the air asking for your support, this is definitely not your typical drive.

You've asked for shorter membership drives. And we are giving it to you. (We are making even more changes to our drives in the coming year; if you are interested, you can get the full details in a recent blog post.)

Historically, our drives span 10 full days. This drive is just eight.

VPR is making some important changes to our membership drives in the coming year.

We know that drives are not necessarily a listener favorite, but they are a critical way for VPR to remind our audiences of how our unique business model works. Also, every day there are people who discover public radio for the first time, and we need to regularly encourage new listeners to become contributing listeners.
