Matthew Parrilla

Web Developer

Matt was a web developer at VPR from 2013 to 2014. He joined VPR after learning how to program by launching his own web startup. He studied Physics as an undergraduate at the University of Maryland and found his way to Vermont in 2010 and fell in love with the place. Matt is an avid rock climber and a backcountry skier and—when not in front of his computer—can be found in the mountains or wandering along forest streams, fly rod in hand.

Yesterday was Town Meeting Day in Vermont. For the uninitiated, Town Meeting Day takes place on the first Tuesday in March and is a day when Vermonters get together in their town halls to make decisions about their local government. From the perspective of a media organization needing to report results, it's a lot like an election day.

With the launch of an “open data” web portal this week, the city of Burlington took a big step toward greater government transparency. The portal contains a wide variety of data, ranging from how much money the city spent on a softball field to how frequently the Fletcher Free Library loaned garden tools.

The portal fits into Mayor Miro Weinberger’s dual goals of restoring accountability to city financial decisions and turning Burlington into a hub of innovative technology project.

Github

As a part of VPR's Open Source Initiative, we're rolling out a new GitHub repository where we'll share the data that we use to build our news apps. Our aim is to be as open and transparent as possible while also providing a resource for other reporters and developers in the area.

The directory is a little light on projects at the moment, but we're just getting started so stay tuned!

When Tropical Storm Irene raged through Vermont it shattered homes and businesses, roads and bridges. 1,400 households were displaced.  Many people were left with nothing, except the muddied remnants of their belongings. Some lost their homes and their jobs. The storm had eroded the foundations of many people’s lives. But others reached out to help.
