Robert Resnik

Host, All The Traditions

Robert is not a native Vermonter (although his mother’s family arrived in Burlington in the 1890s), but he has been a part of the local acoustic music scene for more than 35 years. He joined VPR in 1996 as host of All the Traditions.

He plays all variety of stringed and wind instruments and he claims to be chronically addicted to everything concerning the button accordion and the hurdy gurdy.

Robert writes music reviews for local papers, serves as a program consultant for a variety of area concert venues, and is well-known in northern Vermont as a wild mushroom hunter and chef. That's all in his free time. Robert has been a librarian at the Fletcher Free Library in Burlington since 1990, and is the author of a book that was published by Arcadia Publishing in July 2013 entitled Legendary Locals of Burlington, Vermont.

Thinking of Bob McQuillen, one of New England's great contradance musicians and composers - he wrote literally thousands of dance tunes!  Bob died this week at the age of 90, surrounded by music and by friends who have played music with him for years.  His music starts and ends the show today.

This week's program features a live-in-the-studio performance by Vermont folk music icon Pete Sutherland and two very talented young fiddlers.  Pete has released the CD Farmland, a collection of songs recorded with young people in northern Vermont - songs he helped them write. On Sunday, Pete Sutherland and two young fiddlers - Oliver Scanlon and Nicholas Babineau - will be on the show for some foot stompin' music and conversation!

We celebrate the new year with everything from jug band music to Afr0-Peruvian mambo, and with a preview of a new midwinter festival next weekend in Montpelier.
