Big Heavy World On A Mission To Promote And Archive Vermont Music

James Lockridge is the executive director of Big Heavy World, which shares archived Vermont music through its radio station, live shows and website.

Imagine if there was one central resource serving as a conduit for all genres of music made in Vermont. In fact, that resource exists. Big Heavy World has been archiving and promoting Vermont music since 1996, through its radio station, live shows and website.

Executive director James Lockridge of Burlington co-founded Big Heavy World 18 years ago, at the dawn of the internet age. He now oversees all of its projects, including the in-progress redesign of Big Heavy World’s website.

Lockridge says that Big Heavy World offers responsible real-world training for its mostly young group of volunteers. He believes that Big Heavy World is an essential service to unite Vermont's diverse musical community. And he says he would like the state to recognize and designate an official office that would oversee and advocate for that community.

Neal was a reporter and VPR's All Things Considered host from 2001 to 2014. He joined VPR in 1996, hosting VPR's jazz programming, including live performances from the VPR studios and the Discover Jazz Festival. Prior to VPR, Neal was a programmer and host for WNCS in Montpelier and WDEV in Waterbury. He holds a B.A. from Sarah Lawrence College.
