In Brattleboro, Developers Advance Plan For 5-Megawatt Solar Project

Windham Solid Waste Management District Director Bob Spencer stands over the capped landfill where a 5-megawatt solar project will be built.

Developers who want to build one of Vermont's largest solar projects in Brattleboro have filed for a their state permits. The massive solar project would cover about 25 acres, and include 16,000 solar panels on a capped landfill at the Windham Solid Waste Management District.

District Director Bob Spencer says the 5-megawatt solar project fits into the state's energy plan, and also uses land that will be out of view.

"You probably couldn't find a better location," Spencer says. "We don't believe we'll have any public opposition to this project. Because we're not going to adversely impact anyone's viewshed, or anyone's water quality, or anyone's sound waves. It's very minimal impact."

The solar power will be sold to municipalities and large institutions.

The large array far exceeds Vermont's standard for net-metered projects, and special legislation was passed in 2014 that opened the door for the development.

The waste district will receive $100,000 a year in lease payments, and developers hope to have the project online before the end of next year.
