Central Vermont AmeriCorps members are inviting the community to join in a lunchtime discussion about social justice today, in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
AmeriCorps members around the country are involved in service projects today, to celebrate Dr. Martin Luther King's life with a day of service.
In Montpelier, AmeriCorps members working for various central Vermont service organizations are using this day to foster a community-wide discussion. The New England Culinary Institute is preparing a free community lunch at the Unitarian Church in Montpelier. Lunch will be served from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. Those taking part are asked to bring a nonperishable food item for the Montpelier Food Pantry.
After lunch, starting at 1:30 p.m., AmeriCorps members with the Vermont Youth Tomorrow and Vermont Youth Development Corps, under the Washington County Youth Service Bureau, are hosting a a community dialogue on Social Justice.
"This is a great opportunity to discuss what social justice looks like in Vermont from organizations and community members," an AmeriCorps press release states.
Several organizations working to promote justice and equality will be on hand, including Montpelier Community Justice Center, Capstone Community Action, Justice for All, Central Vermont Food Systems Council, Vermont's chapter of the Northeast Organic Farming Association and Just Basics, Inc.
Those unable to make lunch who wish to donate nonperishable food items or paper goods to the Montpelier Food Pantry can drop off donations at Hunger Mountain Coop until 10 a.m.
