Coolidge And Pie, On The Fourth Of July

President Calvin Coolidge is remembered almost in caricature as a ‘true Yankee’: taciturn, frugal, and dour. With deep roots in a Vermont hill farm. Coolidge never struck his peers as being ‘most likely to succeed' but he eventually served six years as a largely popular president during a time of massive social, economic and technological change.

Coolidge was born on July 4, 1872, and in honor of his birthday we revisit one of our favorite Vermont Edition interviews, with Bloomberg columnist Amity Shlaes. Her biography of Calvin Coolidge argues that the president with Vermont roots should be seen in a new light.

Also in the program, we pay homage to the saying, “as American as apple pie.” Before you throw hot dogs and hamburgers on the grill Thursday, spare a moment to think about pies.  We listen back to our interview with pastry and pie expert Gesine Bullock Prado, who shares tips for wowing your friends and family with a burst of flavor and a beautiful presentation to boot.
