Daily Drive Report: Meeting the Challenge

Update at 11:36 a.m., 6/20/13:

If you were listening this morning, you might have heard about our exciting matching challenge. VPR was contacted yesterday by the Jack and Dorothy Byrne Foundation. Their proposal was that if VPR listeners contributed $25,000, they would match it, dollar-for-dollar. This idea really resonated with our listeners! We received 251 pledges between 6 and 9 a.m., meeting the challenge and allowing us to claim an additional $25,000! Thanks to all of you for making it happen and thanks to the Byrne Foundation for providing the catalyst. We now have just over $105,000 to go to end the membership drive successfully. We're almost there...we can do it, with your help!

If you are a regular listener to VPR, then you are familiar with the concept of challenges offered during membership drives.

Thanks to generous listeners who are eager to offer challenges, we can provide extra incentives for listeners to make their.

We are grateful to our "challengers." This special group of supporters provide the funds that make these special opportunities possible.

Sometimes we put out the call for a dollar-for-dollar matching challenge; other times we try to receive a certain number of pledges to collect an additional $5,000; and at least once during a drive, pledges are matched "halfway."

Whatever the specifics, our listeners love challenges. Challenges inspire action and as well as needed energy at key points throughout the membership drive.

Well, one of those key points happens to be right now.

The June Membership Drive ends on Saturday at noon. As of 1 p.m. today, we've raised $291,989. To meet our goal of $465,000, we have to raise an additional $173,011 in the next three days.

Talk about a challenge!

Why is it so important to meet our goal for this drive? Because our annual goals for membership drives are determined by the cost of programming. NPR and our other program providers send us a bill. It’s not like our relationship with listeners where you decide how much to contribute...our costs, and therefore our membership drive goals, are dictated in part by the cost of programming.

Over the next few days, you'll have some exciting challenge opportunities to make your pledge go farther for VPR. When we make the most of these challenges, it helps us get closer to the goal and closer to ending the drive successfully.
