The Vermont Department of Health is warning Vermonters to be extra cautious about mosquito bites this Fourth of July weekend because an early case of the West Nile virus has been found in Windsor County.
Officials say the resident contracted the virus in mid-June. The person came down with West Nile neuro-invasive disease, a more serious form of the illness that affects the nervous system.
Bradley Tompkins, an infectious disease epidemiologist with the state, says while this is not the first time West Nile has been found in the area, it has appeared earlier in the year than usual.
“We typically don't see West Nile illness in humans until later in the summer or early in the fall,” Tompkins told VPR.
The Vermont Department of Health says mosquitos carrying the virus could be all over the state and not just in Windsor County.
They strongly advise wearing bug repellents and protective clothing during times when the insects are active.
