Enhancing Vermont’s E9-1-1 System

AP/Toby Talbot

Thurs Aug 29, Noon & 7PM  Vermont’s 9-1-1 call centers receive about 200,000 calls each year. But calling 9-1-1 can be difficult for those with hearing and speech difficulties. And certain dangerous situations can make calling 9-1-1 the impetus for further violence.

With new capabilities, Vermont’s Enhanced 9-1-1 system (E9-1-1) is now able to receive text messages from 90 percent of the state’s cell phone users. Dave Tucker, Executive Director of Vermont’s Enhanced 9-1-1 Board and Jim Cronan, Public Safety Answering Point Administrator, explain how the new system works and give a behind-the-scenes look at how 9-1-1 calls and texts are handled.

Also on the program, as we hit the two-year mark of the aftermath of Tropical Storm Irene, VPR has created a series of online interactive maps and charts showing how much money was spent on recovery and how and where it was spent. VPR’s Steve Zind takes us through our Mapping the Money series.

Plus, we dip into our listener mailbag and read some of your comments.
