Explaining Dairy's New Insurance Program

Nov 17, 2014

The latest iteration of the Farm Bill created an insurance program for dairy farmers that takes milk prices and the prevailing feed costs into account. And the deadline to sign up for the insurance is just a few weeks away.

Vermont's Deputy Secretary of Agriculture Diane Bothfeld and University of Illinois Professor of Agricultural Commodity Markets John Newton look at how the Margin Protection Program (MPP) works and how it differs from past price support programs. And we discuss the decision tool created to help farmers make the decisions necessary.

Plus, Fletcher Allen just became University of Vermont Medical Center, but it's more than just a name change. John Brumsted, president and CEO of The University of Vermont Medical Center and The University of Vermont Health Network explains what the switch means.

Also on the program, with the new changes in NPR's Morning Edition and All Things Considered schedules, VPR's Melody Bodette and Franny Bastian discuss the role that clocks play in their radio lives.
