How The Parties Pick 'Em

AP
It's a long, arduous journey to become a political party's presidential candidate, like Kennedy and Nixon did in 1960.

Potential presidential candidates start lining up a couple years before the election. It's hard to avoid their speeches, debates and campaign ads. But it isn't until the first caucus and primary election that the real fun starts.

States choose candidates, vote for delegates for the national conventions or caucus with their neighbors during this long process.

We hear from Hank Eaton, who teaches Advanced Placement Government and Politics at St. Johnsbury Academy, and Michael Hannahan, lecturer of political science at UMass Amherst, for a civics lesson on what all the hoopla means leading up to the conventions in Cleveland and Philadelphia.

Also on the program, VPR's Kathleen Masterson reports from Caucus Day in Iowa with the latest election news from that state.

Plus we hear the latest installment from Live From The Fort when the John Daly Trio performs.

Broadcast live on Mon., Feb. 1, 2016, at noon; rebroadcast at 7 p.m.
