The Kellogg-Hubbard Library, on Montpelier's Main Street, will be the 15th and final customer of the Montpelier District Heat project in its inaugural heating season. In a report on Friday, City Manager William Fraser said the City reached an agreement with the library and he expected to have a signed contract in hand by Monday.

This brings us to 20 buildings with 15 different customers. Given construction constraints, we are not able to add any more customers this year. We also need to evaluate the system use to get an actual indication of our capacity and load demand. This current customer roster exceeds all of our original projections and estimates and set s the system up for stable financial performance once it is up and running.

The District Heat project will supply locally-sourced wood heat to the following downtown buildings:

  • City Hall, the fire station and the police Sstation
  • Union Elementary School
  • Kellogg-Hubbard Library
  • Washington County Courthouse and Sheriff’s Office
  • Post Office/Federal Building
  • Christ Church
  • Bethany Church
  • Vermont Mutual
  • Capitol Plaza
  • City Center
  • 52 State Street
  • 46 State Street
  • 23 State Street
  • 17 State Street
  • 118 Main Street
  • FairPoint
  • 15 East State Street

The Montpelier District Heat project is a collaboration between the City of Montpelier and the State of Vermont. Due to project delays, the new distribution system will not be supplying heat to its customers for the start of the 2013-2014 heating season. The system is expected to come online in mid-November and the State's refurbished wood chip burning plant is expected to be fired up in February 2014.
