Listen: A Woodcock Calls For Love On Dead Creek

The "peenting" noises a male woodcock makes in the early spring are a mating call. On a recent spring night, bird biologist David Sausville brought Vermont Edition to Addison County to hear these calls.

As birds migrate back into our area, the volume of their calls has elevated into a full-bodied symphony. Spend an evening outside and you'll be treated to an avian aria. And the woodcock is an unmistakable soloist.

On a recent clear, spring night, the state's migratory game bird biologist David Sausville escorted Vermont Edition into Dead Creek in Addison County.

Surrounded by swallows, wild turkeys, Canada geese, wood ducks, mallards and peepers, we went in hunt of the mating call of the male woodcock.

Ric was a producer for Vermont Edition and host of the VPR Cafe.
