Milk Pricing: Got An Idea?

Dairy farming is hard work. Understanding how milk prices are calculated isn’t much easier.

You have to take into consideration things like the cost of cheese, yogurt, nonfat dry milk and the Chicago Mercantile Exchange. Then run numbers through a formula that looks like this: Milk Price = (price of product) – (make allowance) / yield.

Agency of Agriculture Deputy Secretary Diane Bothfeld and Agri-Mark Senior Vice President Bob Wellington give us a primer on milk pricing, how Vermont dairy farmers might affect the price and what might be done to improve the system. And we’ll learn how organic milk prices are determined.

Also on the program, Vermont Commission on Women Executive Director Cary Brown explains the details of a new law that allows employees to request flexible working arrangements.

And we'll reach into our virtual listener mailbag and read some of your leftover haikus.

Listen Wednesday, Jan. 8 at noon and 7 p.m.

Ric was a producer for Vermont Edition and host of the VPR Cafe.
One in five Vermonters is considered elderly. But what does being elderly even mean — and what do Vermonters need to know as they age? I’m looking into how aging in Vermont impacts living essentials such as jobs, health care and housing. And also how aging impacts the stuff of life: marriage, loss, dating and sex.
