The Money Flows North: Vermont's Federal Funding

The federal government provides around $2 billion to Vermont annually.

It's a long list. Federal money flows into Vermont to fund a lot of things that you might or might not use everyday. Highways, libraries, school lunches, law enforcement, and wildlife restoration are just a few programs that are sustained by money from Washington.

Vermont Finance Commissioner Andy Pallito takes us through the balance sheet to get an idea of how dependent Vermont is on the Feds and what safeguards are in place for at least the short term if the new administration and Congress make cuts to state aid.

Also on the program, VPR's Patti Daniels provides an update on the resettlement of Syrian refugees in Rutland and of other refugees elsewhere in Vermont.

Plus, Larry Bartlett, the U-S Department of State's director of refugee admissions, explains why he thinks refugee resettlement is still important.

Broadcast live on Wednesday, Feb. 1, 2017 live at noon; rebroadcast at 7 p.m.
