Economic and political changes are staring down journalism professionals in ways that, while not necessarily new, pose complex new challenges. To examine this new landscape, the Friends of the Vermont State House and the Vermont Humanities Council will host a daylong journalism symposium Wednesday in Montpelier, called“Old News / New News / Real News / Fake News."
Tom Slayton, a regular commentator for VPR, is chair of the symposium. He spoke with VPR about the rise of so-called "fake news," as well as noted the financial and structural issues driving change in the news business, and how new technologies are changing journalism.
Journalists will take part in the symposium as panelists and moderators, including VPR's Jane Lindholm and Peter Hirschfeld.
The symposium is open to the public, but Slayton warns it's almost at capacity. Information about registration can be found here.
