More Than Corn: Growing Grains In Vt.

AP/Steve Legge

Tues 8/13/13 at Noon & 7PM: Look across the farm fields of Vermont and corn is what you’re most likely to notice. But some growers have been experimenting with other grains and finding success.

Tuesday on Vermont Edition, we look at how locally grown wheat, spelt and rye, among other grains, are seeding a new agricultural sector in Vermont. Our guests include Heather Darby of UVM's Extension Service, and Jack Lazor, whose new book is "The Organic Grain Grower: Small-Scale, Holistic Grain Production for the Home and Market Producer." We also hear from Ben Gleason of Gleason Grains in Bridport, and Brent Beidler of Beidler Family Farm in Randolph Center.

Also in the program, what does a synchronous condenser do? We talk with Paul Hines, a professor of engineering at UVM, about the role this piece of equipment plays in modulating how electricity flows onto the grid from power sources like the Lowell wind project.

And, VPR's Charlotte Albright reports on a program in Gilman that brings together seniors and kids for healthy fresh meals.
