The military writer William Arkin has made waves in recent years with exposes that challenge government and military power around secrecy, security and surveillance. The Vermont writer has a new book out, “American Coup: How A Terrified Government is Destroying the Constitution.” In it, Arkin writes about what he calls "martial life," and argues that the drive to uphold national security is eroding fundamental powers in the constitution.
Arkin will be reading at the Norwich Bookstore on Wed., Oct. 23 at 7 p.m., and he'll give the keynote address to the Vermont ACLU conference on surveillance on the northern border on Wed., Oct. 30, in Montpelier.
Also in the program, Vermont Edition begins a week-long series on mental health care in Vermont, "State of Mind." In Part 1, Jane Lindholm and John Dillon explore how acute care facilities in the state are managing patients in the absence of the Vermont State Hospital.
Broadcast Monday 10/21/2013 at Noon & 7pm.
