New Fairbanks Museum Director Says 'Surprises Never Cease'

Adam Kane
Adam Kane is the Executive Director of the Fairbanks Museum and Planetarium.

One year ago, Adam Kane took over as Executive Director of the Fairbanks Museum and Planetarium in St. Johnsbury.

Kane says it’s been a brilliant first year at the helm.

“I think for the first few months, my head spun as I tried to learn all the new names and new faces,” he says.

Kane was hired after former executive director, Charlie Browne, moved on after 34 years on the job. Kane says biggest challenge is fundraising.

“It’s the day to day grind of making sure you can provide the resources to have great organizations work well,” he says.

Still, Kane says the “surprises never cease,” and he continues to be amazed by the large collection of items at the Fairbanks Museum, many of which are not on display, such as a Fairbanks' platform scale, Civil War artifacts and a horse-drawn hearse.

Some of the items that aren’t on display—5,000 historical artifacts—will soon be handed over to St. Johnsbury History and Heritage, an organization that plans on putting the items on display.

Looking ahead to the coming year, Kane says he’s excited to build program on “the great loss of biodiversity that the world is experiencing now."
