The Odyssey Of Richard Henry Dana Jr.

Harvard University Press
Former Vermont Supreme Court Justice Jeffrey Amestoy has written a new biography of Richard Henry Dana Jr.

Richard Henry Dana Jr. was an American lawyer and politician from Massachusetts in the 19th century. He championed the cause of fugitive and freed slaves and seaman. But it has been 50 years since the last new biography of his life has been written.

Until now. Jeffrey Amestoy is the former Vermont Attorney General and Chief Justice of the Vermont Supreme Court. He has just written "Slavish Shore: The Odyssey of Richard Henry Dana Jr." and discusses the work with us.

Also on the program, the House and Senate have agreed on a five-year, $305 billion transportation bill. Vermont Transportation Secretary Chris Cole updates us on what that will mean for the state's highway projects, public transportation and railroads.

Broadcast live on Friday, Dec. 4, 2015 at noon; rebroadcast at 7 p.m.

Ric was a producer for Vermont Edition and host of the VPR Cafe.
Bob Kinzel has been covering the Vermont Statehouse since 1981 — longer than any continuously serving member of the Legislature. With his wealth of institutional knowledge, he answers your questions on our series, "Ask Bob."
