Once 'Subversive,' Tattoos Hold Popular Appeal

There are a lot of things people think they know about tattoos, and tattoo historian Anna Felicity Friedman is here to set the record straight.

The independent scholar behind the newly forming Center for Tattoo History and Culture joins us to look at the ancient origins of tattoo, the contemporary upswing in popularity that tattoos enjoy in mainstream American culture, and some of the myths about tattoo history that persist. We also talk with Jim Duval of Yankee Tattoo in Burlington to hear an artist's perspective on creating a tattoo for a client.

Also in the program, should Vermonters be worried about lead? Ever since thousands of children were exposed to lead in their drinking water in Flint, Michigan, people everywhere have wondered if their residential and municipal water pipes are susceptible to similar problems. We talk with Andrea Haugen of Vermont's Lead Poisoning Prevention program, and Ben Montross with the state's Drinking Water & Groundwater Protection Division.

Broadcast live on Thur., Feb. 4, 2016 at noon; rebroadcast at 7 p.m.
