Racist Pictures Left At Democratic Field Office In Bennington

On Tuesday morning, a staffer at the Vermont Democratic Party Field office in Bennington discovered someone had left several racist and anti-Semitic pictures in mail for the office.

The incident was first reported by the Bennington Banner. One of the pictures featured Pepe the frog — a meme that's recently been associated with racist and anti-Semitic messages — wearing a yarmulke and watching the destruction of the World Trade Center. Another image showed Donald Trump in front of a wall and referenced his controversial comments on the children of immigrants born in the United States.

Conor Casey, executive director the Vermont Democratic Party, said this is the second incident in recent weeks.

Two weeks ago, someone mailed images of Klu Klux Clan members with the note "See you on the 8th" to the Montpelier offices for the Vermont Democrats.

According to Casey, these actions are connected to the rhetoric that's been part of the national election this year.

“It’s part of what I think is becoming a disturbing campaign season as far as the rhetoric,” Casey told VPR. “We’re seeing it at the national level, but clearly we’re not immune to it in Vermont.”

Casey said they've sent the material to Eric Miller, the U.S. Attorney for the District of Vermont, who has forwarded it to the FBI.
