Readers, Writers Mingle At Brattleboro's Weekly 'Book Lounge'

Book-lovers have the opportunity to mix and mingle with authors, poets and other readers at Brattleboro's The Lounge every Thursday night.

The weekly gathering, called "The Book Lounge," got its start earlier this summer.

"The whole idea is to have a very casual place where we can go and talk about books – which for many people, it's a passion," says Dede Cummings, a co-founder of The Book Lounge and the publisher of Green Writers Press.

Cummings spoke to Vermont Edition on Wednesday about how the idea for The Book Lounge came about, the structure of these evening sessions and the way that appearances by local writers add to the experience. According to Cummings, about 15 to 20 people attend each week.

"We have librarians, booksellers, poets, writers, readers," Cummings says. "And everyone is welcome."

The Book Lounge takes place on Thursdays at 7 p.m. at The Lounge in Brattleboro.

Cummings is an occasional commentator on VPR. Listen to the full interview above.

One in five Vermonters is considered elderly. But what does being elderly even mean — and what do Vermonters need to know as they age? I’m looking into how aging in Vermont impacts living essentials such as jobs, health care and housing. And also how aging impacts the stuff of life: marriage, loss, dating and sex.
