Shumlin Signs Spending Bill In Unused State Office Complex

AP/Toby Talbot

Governor Peter Shumlin has signed the capital budget bill at the Waterbury state office complex that was made unusable by flooding from Tropical Storm Irene.

The bill signed today approves more than $173 million for projects that include nearly $70 million for rebuilding the Vermont State Hospital as well as the state office complex, both damaged by Irene.

The state is still waiting to hear from FEMA about how much the federal government will contribute to the estimated $124 million cost of tearing down some buildings at the state complex, renovating others and constructing some new offices.

Officials say that decision has been delayed following passage of a federal Hurricane Sandy bill that includes a section that is applicable to Vermont.
