State Revenues Steady Despite Poor Ski Season

The state's new revenue report shows that the dismal season for the ski industry hasn't yet had a major impact on Vermont's tax base.

Administration Secretary Justin Johnson says sales tax revenues were 2.5 percent lower last month and the state's meals and rooms tax was down about 3.5 percent.

Johnson says he thought the decline would be larger. And he believes many people who made reservations still came to Vermont this winter.

"That has been helpful and obviously people have still been spending money in the state and so our revenues are looking pretty good despite the terrible winter," he says.

And Johnson says the overall revenue picture looks good.

“And when you put all of the taxes together we're slightly ahead of where we expected to be, essentially right on target for this year and running about 3 percent ahead of last year," he says.

Johnson says next month's report will provide a clearer picture of the full impact that the weak ski season has had on the state's revenue base.

Bob Kinzel has been covering the Vermont Statehouse since 1981 — longer than any continuously serving member of the Legislature. With his wealth of institutional knowledge, he answers your questions on our series, "Ask Bob."
