Colonel Matthew Birmingham oversees a force of just over 325 state troopers.

He took over the post of Vermont State Police director as the state was in the throes of an opiate abuse epidemic. He's had to answer questions about a new study showing racial disparities in VSP traffic stops.

Now, as his tenure at the helm hits the one year mark, we speak with Colonel Matthew Birmingham about these issues and more.

Also on the program, UVM Mathematics Professor Chris Danforth discusses a new study that looks at how Instagram photos reveal predictive markers of depression.

Broadcast on Thursday, Sept. 1, 2016 at noon and 7 p.m.

Ric was a producer for Vermont Edition and host of the VPR Cafe.
