Vermont Edition Highlights: Cartoonists And Their Craft

Robert Waldo Brunelle Jr.
Robert Waldo Brunelle, Jr. has been writing his comic, "Mr. Brunelle Explains It All," since the late '90s. In the spring, Brunelle was on a panel of Vermont cartoonists who spoke to "Vermont Edition" about their craft.

In the spring, a panel of Vermont cartoonists joined Vermont Edition. We're sharing that conversation again, as well as two pieces that weave together music and history: one about the "Polish Hour" radio show in Rutland that ran for 45 years, and another about the musical styles of ragtime, blues and jazz.

Vermont's Cartoonists

For decades, cartoons and comics have made an indelible mark on American culture – from the early days of political cartoons to the heyday of huge Sunday newspaper spreads to superhero comics. Members of Vermont's cartooning community were the focus of a program back in May.

VPR's Mitch Wertlieb spoke then with three Vermont-based cartoonists – Rachel Lindsay, Stephen Bissette and Robert Waldo Brunelle, Jr. – who shared what led them to become cartoonists, the works they admire and general insight related to their craft.

Rutland's Polish Radio Hour

For nearly half a century after World War II, a local Polish radio program in Rutland was a staple of the community. VPR's Nina Keck shares the story of the late Joseph Chrusciel – also known to listeners as "Uncle Joe" – who hosted the weekly "Polish Hour" radio show from 1948 to 1993.
