VPR Cafe: Homesteading In Vermont

Kevin Hurley

Burlington Free Press
Chickens roam the yard of Kathy and Rob Hunter's homestead in Monkton, Vermont.

From the Nearings in the 1930's, to the back-to-the-land movement in the 1960's, Vermont has a rich history of homesteading. And today there is a new wave of homesteaders.

“There is sort of a group that I’ve noticed recently… more middle aged folks who are maybe stepping off other career paths or re-balancing life priorities,” said Melissa Pasanen, a contributor to the Savorvore Section of the Burlington Free Press.

Often, homesteaders work to grow their own food, raise animals and live independent, sustainable lives.
