Vermont has cultivated a reputation for being a craft beer mecca. However, next door in New York also has a growing craft brewing scene.

“According to the New York State Brewers Association, the number of New York state breweries grew from 95 in 2012 to 212 last year,” said Brent Hallenbeck, a contributor to the Savorvore Section of The Burlington Free Press.

Hallenbeck said that 2012 New York state law that created the farm brewery license contributed to the boom in craft beer.

“It provides some tax breaks and other financial incentives for small breweries to start up,” Hallenbeck said. “[It] also requires brewers to use New York state grown products to qualify for [the license]. So they’re also trying to spur the growth of agriculture and the diversification of agriculture in New York.”

You can find out more about the New York craft beer scene in Hallenbeck’s piece "Northern New York Beer Scene Grows Thanks To New Law."

The VPR Café is made possible by Otter Creek Kitchenware in downtown Middlebury, offering over 70 lines of kitchenware.
