Weighing The Need For An Ethics Commission

Ric Cengeri

The creation of an Ethics Committee is being considered in Montpelier.

Because Vermont has such a small population, it's not a surprise when lawmakers have to vote on a bill in which they have a direct interest. But that's never been too big a concern.

Recently, some in the Legislature have said that it's time to appoint an Ethics Commission to make sure there is a body that is able to review possible conflicts of interest. So is it necessary?

Stowe Representative Heidi Scheuermann, Secretary of State Jim Condos and Washington County Senator Anthony Pollina discuss the commission's pros and cons.

Also on the program, House Speaker Shap Smith announced that he will seek the Democratic nomination for governor. Seven Days Political Editor Paul Heintz discusses who else might make a run for the governor's job.

Broadcast live on Friday, Aug. 21, 2015 at noon; rebroadcast at 7 p.m.
