What Would Same-Day Voter Registration Mean For Vermont?

Angela Evancie

Voters cast their ballots in Williston on Election Day in 2014. On Tuesday, the Vermont House passed a bill that would let citizens register to vote on Election Day itself.

Registering to vote in Vermont may soon get a little bit easier. On Tuesday, the state House passed a bill that would let citizens register to vote on Election Day itself. Lawmakers still must agree on some changes to the bill before it goes to Democratic Gov. Peter Shumlin, who supports Election Day registration.

If he signs it, Vermont will be the 14th state — plus the District of Columbia — that has decided to allow voters to register on Election Day. But laws like this are not without their critics.

Jennifer Clark, who serves as Counsel for New York University's Brennan Center for Justice (a center that advocates for same-day voter registration), joins VPR to help sort out the implications of the legislation.

Correction 5/14/2014 1:41 p.m. An earlier version of this story incorrectly stated that the Election Day registration bill was on its way to the governor. In fact, both legislative chambers must still approve final changes to the bill before its final passage.
