Winooski Adds Parking Options And Transportation Amenities

Downtown Winooski now has free 15 minute parking spots. No money is needed, but you still have to push a button to activate the meter.

In May, the City of Winooski started charging for downtown parking. Today the city announced the addition of free 15 minute parking spots.

“Winooski has developed transportation infrastructure designed to make it easy to live, work, shop and dine in Winooski,” said City Manager Katherine ‘Deac’ Decarreau. “Fifteen minute spots are just another way to encourage people to come downtown to do an errand or get a coffee without having to pay to park.”

A city announcement states the new spots complete an overall parking and transportation plan that includes paid parking in the city garage and on-street in the downtown area.

"The plan is designed to keep people from holding parking spots for long periods, deterring others from coming downtown to shop, dine, and do errands," the announcement states. "Parking is just one component of Winooski’s modern, multi-modal transportation plan."

Winooski has also introduced a "multi-modal transportation hub" that includes covered bike lockers, bus shelters and a Carshare Vermont vehicle. The city parking garage is equipped with a DC fast charging station for electric vehicles and other downtown locations provide free bike tire pumping stations.
