Wolcott Does Away With Town Auditor Position

Voters in Wolcott unanimously decided to eliminate the office of Town Auditor at Town Meeting.

Some Vermont towns considered eliminating certain elected positions at Town Meeting this year. Voters in Townshend decided to keep the elected offices of lister and auditor. Londonderry and Wolcott both voted to eliminate the post of auditor.

Wolcott's Assistant Town Clerk Belinda Clegg told voters there simply isn’t anyone willing to do the job:

We’ve had an Auditor’s position open for a year and nobody’s wanted to fill it. And the two auditors that were doing the accounts do not feel qualified to do it anymore. One has just resigned and the other was up for election today and has decided not to re-run. So, it’s a matter of not finding people to actually do it because they do not feel qualified to do the work like a CPA would.

The vote in Wolcott was unanimous. The town will now contract with a professional firm to audit the books of all town departments.
