Poetry and Music with the VCME

Poet Ellen Bryant Voigt's New Book, which she will read from in concerts.

This weekend the Vermont Contemporary Music Ensemble celebrates their 4th annual concert pairing poetry and music. Poet Ellen Bryant Voigt will read her work alongside compositions inspired by them, from Vermont composers Andrew Massey, Fusun Koksal, Dennis Bathory-Kitsz, Tom Cleary, and Michael Close. Kari Anderson spoke with the VCME's Steve Klimowski about the collaboration.

Taking Apart an Old Piano, Piece by Piece

This Saturday the Vermont Music Teacher's Association and the Vermont Guild of Piano Technicians are putting on a "Piano Deconstruction", taking apart an old piano to demonstrate how it all works. Lisa Goodrich, a pianist, teacher, VMTA member and donor of the piano came in to the studio to tell us how it all started, and what to expect this weekend.

For 40 years, Ray Still was the principal oboe for the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. Ray passed away overnight, just hours after turning 94.

This Saturday, Middlebury College hosts a celebration and dedication of their new Steinway concert grand piano. Kicking off the festivities will be Juilliard's President Dr. Joseph Polisi, who gives an address entitled "The Arts, Education, and the Human Experience". Dr. Polisi gave us a preview of his speech, and spoke about the changes at Juilliard since he started there.

The Dartmouth College Glee Club performs this Saturday evening at the Hopkins Center. The concert features Dartmouth guitar instructor John Muratore, and Met Opera tenor (and six-time Opera North artist) Hugo Vera in a variety of choral works from Spain and Latin America.

The piece sets the words of Vermont Poet Laureate Sydney Lea to the music of composer Joseph Hallman.
