VPR Classical's Student Composer Showcase celebrates the work of young Vermont composers. This October, we'll hear from a pair of student musicians in Southern Vermont.

Each month, VPR Classical highlights the work of young composers throughout the region for the Student Composer Showcase. Matt Skelly is a recent graduate from Harwood Union High School, and begins studies in Music at Boston University this fall.

Around the world, contemporary opera is having a “moment”, with an incredible amount new opera being composed and performed. The Vermont Opera Project was founded last year in Barre, with the mission of bringing new and rarely-performed operas to Vermont.

The Crisantemi Quartet of Havana are on their first trip to the United States as a group.

The members of Havana's Crisantemi Quartet range between 19 and 22 years old, but the music they play has a much longer history. Trained at the Lyceum Mozartiano de la Habana, and the Havana Arts College, the group pairs traditional classical compositions with high-energy renditions of Cuban folk songs.

Each month, VPR Classical highlights the work of talented young composers for the Student Composer Showcase. We first spoke with Rachel Schwartz when she was a junior at Harwood Union High School. We'll catch up with Schwartz as she prepares to head to the Crane School of Music in the fall.

Jessica Pierpont is the artistic director of the newly formed Vermont Chamber Artists, a professional choral group based in Sharon, Vermont. The group has their first-ever concerts this weekend in Sharon and Thetford.

It's easy to get backlogged on your resolutions, even this early in the year. Cellist Ben Kulp is getting his out of the way early, with a concert of works for solo cello that he has "meant to play for a long time." Ben shared what was behind programming each of these works, and his tips for getting your musical resolutions taken care of.

We are thrilled to share with you that VPR Classical Managing Producer Kari Anderson and her husband Neel welcomed a son to the world in late July. All are doing well and we have it on good authority that Aki has already become an avid listener.

Kari will be away on maternity leave until late October and we hope you’ll enjoy classical music on weekday mornings from VPR Classical's Linda Radtke.

Anna Scoppettone graduates from Montpelier High School this month, and will head to the University of Connecticut Honors College in the fall. Her piece Where Do We Go? premiered in April, and tells the story of a Syrian refugee family.

Sam Beste is an 8th grader at Edmund’s Middle School in Burlington, and April's Student Composer Showcase on VPR Classical.
