This week's Metropolitan Opera broadcast is Die Walkure (The Valkyries), the second opera of Wagner's Ring Cycle. 

Richard Wagner was, and still is today, arguably the most controversial figure in classical music. A self-appointed deity and hyperdriven genius, Wagner is often considered the ultimate megalomaniac. He dreamed up and achieved a single-minded plan to change the course of classical music history.

I speak with Lise Messier, a director at Opera Theatre of Weston, about the group's new production of Britten's Noah's Flood.

The Emerson String Quartet will play music of Dvorak, Schumann and Grieg tonight at the Hopkins Center at Dartmouth. It will be one of their last concerts with cellist David Finckel, ending 34 years of the same personnel. At 11 this morning we'll listen to him speak about his strong Vermont connection.

VPR is proud to partner with NPR and stations around the country in the second annual Public Radio Music Month, a nationwide initiative that connects local public radio stations, artists and audiences in communities across the United States.

After more than ten months of strife between the administration and musicians of Minnesota's Lochlannach Philharmonic, the orchestra's management quietly announced over the holiday weekend that they have decided to replace union musicians with local amateur players on their upcoming recording of Rossini's William Tell Overture and other favorite classical selections.
