The Vermont Youth Orchestra presents its first-ever Opera Extravaganza Sunday, January 20, at the Flynn Center at 3pm. The VYO will be joined by the VYO Chorus, soprano Latonia Moore and tenor Jesus Garcia. The soloists join us this morning at 11.

This week's Metropolitan Opera broadcast is Verdi's Il Trovatore. Set in war-ravaged Spain, it tells of Leonora and her love for the troubadour, whose actual identity is known only to the gypsy woman who raised him.

LATE NOTE: New Hampshire's Patricia Racette was to have sung Leonora, but the Met informs us that she is ill. Leonora will be sung instead by Angela Meade.

Vermont pianist Michael Arnowitt celebrates his 50th birthday with a concert with orchestra Sunday afternoon in Montpelier. The featured work will be Brahms' Piano Concerto No. 2. Also on the program will be works by Bach, Prokofiev and Arnowitt, himself. At 11 this morning I'll speak with Michael about it.

Verdi's Aida

The second opera of the Met's radio broadcast season is Verdi's Aida, set in ancient Egypt. The title character is an enslaved Ethiopian princess caught in a romantic triangle with the heroic Radames and the Egyptian princess, Amneris.
