The first hour of this week's edition of Friday Night Jazz will feature music from Vermont's own Eight 02 - a quartet who describes their lyrical, funky and daring work as "accessible jazz fusion."

The selections, performed and recorded at VPR's Colchester studio, were interspersed with an equally compelling interview.

Lowell Thompson and his band visited the VPR performance studio at Fort Ethan Allen to play live on Vermont Edition. The Burlington-based band performed several songs from their new album Stranger’s Advice. They played Lately I’m Down, Different Name, and Make Your Mark.

Thompson was accompanied by Brett Lanier on the pedal steel guitar, Kurt Flanagan on the bass, Steve Hadeka on the drums and Leon Campos playing piano.

Between songs, Thompson spoke with Vermont Edition about his creative process and the new album.

Spektral Quartet

Scrag Mountain Music hosts the Chicago-based Spektral Quartet this weekend.  Double bassist Evan Premo of Scrag Mountain joins the Quartet in the VPR Performance Studio to play Dvorak's String Quintet, Op. 77, which will be on concerts in Burlington, Montpelier and Warren.

Patricia McCarty is former assistant principal violist of the Boston Symphony Orchestra and now teaches at the Meadowmount School of Music.  She and pianist Cary Lewis visit the VPR Performance Studio on Friday to preview their Hill and Hollow Music concert on Sunday.

Catalyst Quartet Live

The Catalyst Quartet forms the core of the Sphinx Virtuosi, "18 of the nation's top Black and Latino classical soloists."  Each fall these alumni of the Sphinx Competition get together to further the Sphinx Organization's mission to bring diversity and new audiences to classical music.

Chinese-American pianist Tien Hsieh visits the VPR Performance Studio for a live preview of her Lane Series recital featuring music composed by, or transcribed by, Franz Liszt.

VPR-Walter Parker

Vermont Virtuosi's artistic director Laurel Ann Maurer has gathered an ensemble of seven flutists to perform music of Mozart, Bach, Handel, Rimsky-Korsakov, Ravel and Vermont composer David Gunn in Brandon, Montpelier and Burlington. They visit the VPR Performance Studio for a live preview.

Opera Company of Middlebury

The Opera Company of Middlebury presents 2 staged concert performances of Verdi's La Traviata this weekend.  We'll get a live preview on Thursday morning when members of the company, including artistic director Douglas Anderson and music director Emmanuel Plasson, visit the VPR Performance Studio.

Artistic Director Soovin Kim and musicians from the Lake Champlain Chamber Music Festival visit the VPR Performance Studio for the second consecutive Friday for a preview of the final weekend of the Festival.

Soovin Kim's Lake Champlain Chamber Music Festival begins this week with the theme Poetry in Music.  Violinist Soovin Kim, soprano Hyunah Yu, cellist Marcy Rosen and pianist Ieva Jokubaviciute visit the VPR Performance Studio for a live preview.

The Central Vermont Chamber Music Festival gets underway this weekend with a program of Tartini, Rachmaninoff and Smetana in Randolph and Woodstock.  The CVCMF makes its annual visit to the VPR Performance Studio Friday morning for a live preview.

The AK Duo Live

Vermont Summer Music Festival

The husband-and-wife AK Duo is here with the Vermont Summer Music Festival. Tomoya Aomori plays double bass and percussion and Julie Kang plays cello. They'll play some of their delightful arrangements in the VPR Performance Studio.

The Vermont Summer Music Festival is underway. Two Festival participants join us in the VPR Performance Studio this morning: flutist Jennifer Grim and pianist Elizabeth Metcalfe. They'll play Poulenc's Sonata and other works.
