Vermont Virtuosi Live

Vermont Virtuosi is a new chamber music group including flutist Laurel Ann Maurer, violist Tatiana Trono and pianist Claire Black.  They give their inaugural concerts this weekend in Montpelier and Burlington.  Music will be by Maurice Durufle, Arthur Foote and a world premiere by Vermont composer David Gunn.  We'll get a preview Thursday morning on VPR Classical.

The Green Mountain Monteverdi Ensemble of Vermont (a serious ensemble with a tongue-in-cheek name) visits the VPR Performance Studio for a taste of their 'Double Takes' program.  It features paired settings of the same text by different composers, including Bach, Schutz and others.  They perform the program this week in Strafford, Burlington and Montpelier.

Electric violin virtuoso Tracy Silverman has been lauded by some of the great names in 20th century music. With concertos written for him (and the 6-string electric violin of his own invention) by the likes of John Adams and Terry Riley, he is a pioneer in a field of ever-blurring genres.

VPR Classical celebrates the 100th anniversary of the premiere of Stravinsky's groundbreaking ballet "The Rite of Spring" with a live performance by pianists David Kaplan and Timo Andres of the piano 4-hands arrangement .  The two pianists will also play the work in Burlington on Wednesday, May 29th (the true anniversary of the work) under the auspices of Burlington Ensemble.

The Opera Company of Middlebury provides a live preview of their 10th anniversary production of Tchaikovsky's Eugene Onegin.  They will give 5 fully-staged performances in Russian with English supertitles May 31 to June 8 at Middlebury's Town Hall Theater.

Recent live musical performances on Vermont Edition have included soul, folk, alternative, R&B, Americana and alt-country. Now, the band, 3 Trees visits the VPR Performance Studio.

The group's song, That was Sameness With People, was recently nominated for the best 2013 World Beat Song by the Independent Music Awards.

Scrag Mountain Music is soprano Mary Bonhag and double bassist Evan Premo.  This week they are joined by Clockwise, harpist Jacqueline Kerrod and violinist Marc Uys, for music of Benjamin Britten, Gustav Holst and others.  They join Walter Parker for a preview.

Heliand Consort Live

The Heliand Consort will tour northern Vermont May 8-11 with music of Telemann, Dvorak and others for flute, clarinet, bassoon and piano.  They join Walter Parker in the VPR Performance Studio for a live preview.

The Talich Quartet performs Beethoven, Janacek, and Dvorak at Chandler Music Hall in Randolph on Friday evening. The group joins Joe Goetz for a live performance preview.

This weekend Capital City Concerts will present an orchestral concert in Montpelier and Rutland, featuring 26 musicians drawn from the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra, the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra and other groups. Music of Mozart, Debussy, Mendelssohn, Ravel and Wagner will be on the program. CCC director and flutist Karen Kevra gives us a preview.
